Leading up to launch, I've been thinking a lot about expectations lately. This Saturday was my fake birthday (since I leave on my real birthday) and it was honestly one of my best birthdays ever. I didn't really get any presents or have any big events planned for me, just an open mind and quality time with people I love. I think everyone has had the experience of having a special occasion to turn out terribly just because nothing lived up to what you imagined--and that all comes down to expectations.
When people have been asking me about how I feel transitioning into this next season, I tell them I try not to think about it too much. Obviously I have to think about it some, but I know if I start to dwell on what's ahead, not only will I miss what's happening where I am now, but I will also place anxious anticipations upon this new opportunity. Our minds are great at overthinking and running wild, which just turns into anxiety. Especially when it's (meaning leaving home to live out of a backpack abroad for 9 months) something I've literally never experienced, it's easy to let my imagination take over my heart and mind. I'm trying to be present where I am now so I can be present in the transition when the time comes.
My birthday had so many wonderful surprises that I would have missed had I placed a bunch of expectations on that day. A too hot hike, not so tight dress zippers, choreography review, spur of the moment coffee, a rainy German party, a mis matched meal, crumbling cake, cream cheese in a gift bag, and commercial dance breaks, to name a few. I don't want to miss the little, unexpected surprises God may have in store coming up, so I am praying that the Lord will help me hold this experience with open hands!
